Training for the Goodnight Walk! | Fundraising

This week, I’ve decided to step up my game as it’s less than 2 weeks until the Goodnight Walk!

As I spend a lot of time at my desk, I thought that it would be best to get myself into a walking routine so that 10 miles won’t seem too bad by the 2nd July. Also, I kinda need to walk more to improve my overall health – my heart was affected by the chemo & I feel like I should make more of an effort to strengthen it.

One of my New Years’ Resolutions this year was to get outside more and I feel that training for the Goodnight Walk has definitely helped me with that. Every day, I’m either walking to the shops, around the block or even further afield. And I’m doing it whatever the weather!

I listen to music while I’m walking or put on one of my podcasts (you actually learn a lot from them!) and I set off for either a quick, brisk walk or a slower, more leisurely one depending on what kind of thing I’ve got playing.

To give me some motivation, I thought I would invest in a pedometer/stepometer. A lot of them are really expensive as they link up to Bluetooth and monitor your progress but I wanted a really simple one that just told me how many steps I take without any fancy things attached. After spending ages looking online, I took a stroll down to the shops and found one for just £3- something in Lloyds Pharmacy. I bought it there & then without reading any reviews!

Now, before you go clicking on that hyperlink, let me just say that the 1-star this stepometer has got in online reviews is not necessarily what I would give it! Yes, it is very simple and at times, it can be inaccurate but it definitely does the job I want it to.

It’s both easy to set up and easy to use. It pretty much counts every single movement as a step so if you scratch your head while sitting down watching tele, it’ll probably say that you’ve taken a step on your pedometer. The clasp is quite tight so it’s hard to fit on to your waistband (I think it counted 10 steps when I was just trying to put it on!) but if you keep at it, it slides on & stays on. You’ll just have to take off those extra 10 steps it counted…

Rather than use this for every step I take each day, I only use it when I’m out and about and I find that it’s very useful. Although the amount of steps it records may seem a bit much, the calories I’m burning seem to be quite accurate for the amount I’m walking so the pedometer must be doing something right!

I can’t wait to complete the Goodnight Walk with my best friend – it’s going to be so much fun & I’m gonna be so proud when we walk across that finish line!

But for now, I’m gonna keep practising…
