Hey lovely people,
I recently finished reading a self-help book for the first time ever & it was quite an experience. A friend lent me the book The Right Questions by Debbie Ford a few years ago and I’ve only just got around to reading it.
Synopsis
The Right Questions is a self-help book that poses ten questions to the reader in order to ‘guide you to an extraordinary life’. It’s all about realising that the decisions we make have consequences months and years down the line. Getting stuck in a routine & staying inside our comfort zone doesn’t allow us any room for growth and therefore, if we want to break out of that, we need to consciously make decisions that take us out of this cycle.
Each chapter focuses on a different question and explains how making a conscious decision can enrich the reader’s life.
Review
When I picked this book up, I have to say I was a little sceptical – probably because I’d never read anything like it before. But after reading it and applying some of its lessons to my life, I’ve found that it has made me more aware of how many ‘safe’ decisions I make and how these are hindering my progress!
One of the chapters that particularly stood out for me was ‘Will This Choice Propel Me Towards an Inspiring Future or Will It Keep Me Stuck in the Past?’ It was all about giving up a ‘safe’ option to take a risk on something else and it really hit home for me. At the moment, I’m trying to build a life that I really want as having cancer taught me not to waste a moment doing something I dislike (such as a boring job) unless it’s really, really necessary.
Ford also gives examples of those who have made more time for the things they love and notes that they are happier and more satisfied with their lives because of this change. Sticking to a comfortable lifestyle without doing something that you’re passionate about and without feeling that you’re making a difference to the world is easy. You need to take the leap and branch out to be truly happy with your life.
At times, this book was a little cheesy as I suspected it would be with phrases like ‘nourish your soul’ and ‘if we choose to live in faith, we will be blessed with the support and the partnership of the universe.’ However, I’m a strong believer in the idea that if you put good things out into the universe, you get good things back and although Debbie Ford’s use of language can come across as a little bit cringe-worthy, I appreciated where she was coming from and the points she was making.
The Final Word
Overall, I gave this book 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads – it was quick and easy to read & offered some valuable advice that I will apply to my life. If your life needs shaking up a little, I would definitely recommend it!
See ya next week!
Love,
