Create Affirmations to Live By | Wellbeing

Affirmations are one of the most simple ways to start changing the way you talk to yourself. They’re positive statements that help you confront your negative thoughts, and get into more of a growth mindset.

If you use affirmations regularly as part of a wider plan to grow your self-confidence, they can really help you see the world from a different point of view.

Here’s how to create affirmations that are perfect for you:

  1. Understand the Power of Affirmations

The way you talk to yourself has a huge impact on the way you feel about yourself. When you use affirmations, you’re deliberately taking a more positive view on the world. Repeating them daily strengthens these more positive thoughts, gradually replacing limiting beliefs that are holding you back.

  1. Get Specific

To make affirmations impactful, you need to get specific. Instead of using vague statements like “I want to be happy,” create affirmations that are clear and definite, such as “I am worthy of happiness, and I attract joy into my life.” Your mind responds better to positive language, so avoid using negative words such as “I’m not” or “I won’t” and replace them with “I am” statements instead.

  1. Use The Present Tense

Affirmations are most effective when stated in the present tense. By affirming that you already have what you need or want, you signal to your subconscious that this reality is within reach. For example, rather than saying “I will be successful,” say “I am successful and capable of achieving my goals.”

  1. Engage Your Emotions

Emotions give affirmations an extra boost of power. When you repeat your affirmations, engage your emotions and truly feel the truth behind the words. Try to embody the emotions associated with achieving your goals, such as excitement, gratitude, or determination. This emotional charge strengthens the neural connections in your brain, making your affirmations more effective.

  1. Be Realistic Yet Ambitious

Affirmations should strike a balance between being realistic and ambitious. Aim high, but ensure your affirmations align with your values and capabilities. If the affirmation feels too far-fetched, it’ll be too difficult for your mind to align that with where you currently are. For instance, if you want to advance in your career, say “I am steadily progressing in my career, and I am open to new opportunities that align with my passions.”

  1. Consistency is Key

Creating affirmations is just the beginning; practicing them consistently is where the magic happens. Incorporate your affirmations into your daily routine. Repeat them in the morning, during meditation, before bedtime, or whenever you need a confidence boost. Consistency helps reinforce the positive beliefs and gradually replace negative thought patterns.

  1. Visualise Your Affirmations

Visualisation is so effective, and I loved using it with my clients when I did confidence coaching sessions. You can pair your affirmations with visualisation to strengthen their impact. Close your eyes and vividly imagine yourself living the reality of your affirmations. Feel the emotions, see all the tiny details, and immerse yourself in the whole positive experience. Visualisation enhances the effectiveness of affirmations by creating a powerful mental image of your desired outcomes.

Try It Yourself

By harnessing the power of positive language, and staying consistent with it, you can shape a new reality for yourself. Remember, the key is to believe in the potential of your affirmations and to embrace the journey of personal growth with a growth mindset.

Let me know how you get on,
